Kipchumba Murkomen, a Cabinet member, recently benefited from strong lobbying by Rift Valley leaders.
These leaders felt that their Kalenjin community was not well-represented in President William Ruto’s 21-member Cabinet.
Currently, only Murkomen and Davis Chirchir, the Transport and Roads Cabinet Secretary, represent the community.
This concern grew after the removal of Simon Chelugui and Florence Bore from the Cabinet. In Baringo County, the dissatisfaction was especially high, as they believed they deserved at least one Cabinet slot.
To address this unrest, President Ruto made significant changes. Murkomen was moved to the powerful Interior docket, which had been left vacant after Kithure Kindiki became Deputy President.
Salim Mvurya, who was previously handling the ICT docket, was reassigned to take Murkomen’s position in the Sports docket.
These adjustments aimed to calm the growing discontent among Rift Valley leaders and ensure fairer representation.
