Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju’s trajectory has taken a new course after his tenure in the government of President William Ruto. A prominent figure in the former President Uhuru Kenyatta administration, Tuju had a substantial role within the inner circles of power. He served as the Secretary General of the ruling Jubilee Party before being brought into Uhuru’s cabinet as a Cabinet Secretary Without Portfolio.

In the lead-up to the 2022 general election, Tuju stepped down from his position as Jubilee Party Secretary General. Subsequently, he assumed the role of Executive Director in the newly-established Azimio la Umoja coalition, which rallied behind former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s presidential bid.

During this period, Tuju formed an unexpected alliance with Raila, his historical political rival. Simultaneously, he emerged as a vocal critic of then Deputy President William Ruto.

However, with Ruto’s surprising victory over Raila in the presidential race, Tuju was among the cohort of key figures from the Uhuru era who saw their roles come to an end. Following this, he retreated from the public eye, focusing on his business ventures.

In a recent interview with a local newspaper, the former Cabinet Secretary – who had previously served as Rarieda MP and foreign affairs minister during former President Mwai Kibaki’s tenure – disclosed his return to the field of consultancy.

Tuju, leveraging his extensive background in journalism, is venturing into media consultancy. Additionally, he has interests in the hospitality and real estate sectors. Despite his prominent political standing, Tuju has consciously chosen a more private role since the 2022 election, preferring to operate behind the scenes.
