“…the club owner too has been arrested. They will be arraigned in court tomorrow,” a message titled ‘Good News’ was posted and shared among hundreds, with an association called Women Students Welfare Association leading the charge.
All weekend claims that a female student had been raped in a club were doing rounds. It put Memphis Club on the spot together with a suspect, Barbuh Stephens, who came out fighting to clear his name before being arrested by Kasarani Police.
“They ruin my name but its fine. You have won. Remember I’m still the kind man. All I know is that I ain’t a rapist. I am a starboy who ain’t desperate for sex. I’m a star. Stop hating my hard work. If you can’t be like me then join me I teach you the hustle. Don’t hate me,” posted Barbuh Stephens with police on his case and a demo that was already getting organised against him.
A video of the alleged victim had been doing rounds on social media. She is seen being walked out of the club by three men. The incident allegedly took place a week ago. Come Tuesday, things seemed to take a different turn. Just what happened? What is the truth?
It was on the eve of Eid when the victim is said to have made her way to the Memphis Club in company of her two friends and two men, one of them identified as Barbuh Stephens.
The management says that the group spent the better part of the night merrymaking. At one time the victim left the table she was sharing with Barbuh and her friends and joined an unidentified man at the VIP section of the club.
She spent some time with him before he blacked out.
From the CCTV footage that Pulse has since received from the Memphis, she took one of the drinks that he had ordered and took it to the table where Barbuh and her friends were.
The party continued and she is captured at one time leaving the club briefly in company of Barbuh and then they later came back and continued partying. At around 4am, Barbuh bid them goodbye and left.
The management says that from the CCTV footage, after Barbuh left the ladies then joined the second suspect in the case identified as Fred. With Fred the victim spent the morning together until they left the club at 8:33am in the footage that has been circulating on social media.
CCTV cameras captured them at 7:42am before they left the club, the video seen by Pulse shows the victim and Fred at the club before she leaves briefly and the waiter brings the bill.
The management maintains that the victim did not talk to the manager of the club, the only senior staff that spoke was the supervisor who asked and accompanied her to return the drink she had taken from the guy she had joined earlier at the VIP who blacked out and was carried home by his friends.
Reaching out to those that had been vocal on the matter on social media the management tells Pulse that they confessed to being students at one of the universities and had been paid to make the hashtag to close down the club trend for a week but had a disagreement with their financiers.
Which could explain why the hash tag to close down the club trended for a day then slowly faded.
Barbuh Stephens
Xtian Dela who broke the news of the rape incident says that she reported the matter at the Kiambu Police Station under OB number 28/21/8/2018. When Barbuh was arraigned in court the accuser (or) victim wasn’t present.
Barbuh is a frequent reveller at the club but doesn’t work for them as claimed and as he posted in some of his Instagram photos. His recent activity on social media shows him trying to clear the name of the club.
The unconfirmed
After leaving the club the whereabouts of the lady are not known. An audio recording that is said to have been released by an Uber driver who is said to have found her in a coffee plantation in Kiambu and took her to Kiambu Police Station to report the incident.
In the audio clip the victim is heard alleging that Fred raped her with the help of his friends.
In the statements that she recorded she says that she was raped at the parking lot. In another interview with the police, she says that she was raped in a ‘shamba’ in Kiambu and in another she says that she was raped at the club inside the washroom.
