Raila Odinga, the head of the Azimio party, has come under fire from Parliamentary Service Commissioner Johnson Muthama for encouraging Kenyans to practice civil disobedience and stop paying taxes.
By refusing to pay taxes, Raila claimed, the Kenya Kwanza administration would be unable to provide services.
The contentious Finance Bill of 2023, whose proposed tax policies would go into effect on July 1, 2023, received the president’s assent. William Ruto.
Raila’s opposition had requested changes to the legislation, but the ruling party in Parliament used its numerical advantage to reject the request.
On Tuesday, Raila urged Kenyans to refuse to pay the new taxes and reject the money the government hopes to collect as a result of the new tax policies.
He asserted that President William Ruto’s administration will be able to strengthen the economy if Kenyans are able to contribute to the development of the country.
He continued by saying that protests are backward-looking and bad for the nation’s future.
The former senator for Machakos urged the administration to work to close any gaps that permit theft and the waste of public funds.
For the benefit of Kenyans, he also asked leaders to exercise caution and participate in cross-party discussions.
