Governor James Orengo on Wednesday, February 26, received and accompanied their party leader, Raila Amolo Odinga, as he arrived in Yala Township Ward, Gem Constituency, to pay homage to the fallen academic giant, Professor Bethwel Allan Ogot.The distinguished scholar was laid to rest on Saturday last week. “Baba karibu Siaya,” Orengo wrote, welcoming Raila to the county.
Professor Bethwel Allan Ogot was eulogized as a distinguished historian whose works significantly shaped the understanding of the Luo community’s history and Africa’s academic landscape.
His legacy continues to inspire scholars across generations.
During funeral ceremony held at Maseno University’s Odera Akang’o campus in Yala, prominent leaders, including Siaya Governor James Orengo and Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, honored the late historian for his immense contributions.
They described him as a beacon of knowledge whose scholarly works remain a reference for many.In a speech delivered on his behalf by Prof. Adams Oloo, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga lauded Ogot’s role in defining the Luo people’s identity.
“We know who we are as a community because of his studies and publications. His writings have been incorporated into our education system,” Raila stated.
Professor Ogot was a prolific writer, having authored 43 books and published over 100 articles in reputable academic journals.
His research covered a wide range of topics, from pre-colonial African history to post-independence political transformations.
Even at 95, he remained actively engaged in academic work, releasing the Dholuo-English Dictionary and Odera Akang’o in 2024.
Beyond academia, Ogot played a vital role in shaping Kenya’s intellectual and cultural heritage, leaving behind an unmatched legacy.
