At one point, Dr Agnes Zani was the most powerful woman in ODM. This was the time she served as the party’s acting Secretary General.
Dr Zani, a career educationist, had helped to steady the ODM ship following the resignation of the then SG Ababu Namwamba in the run up to the 2017 general election.
As the engine running one of the largest political parties in the country at the time, the former nominated senator was a key member of the former Prime Minister’s inner sanctum.
It is therefore not surprising that she was nominated for another term by her party ODM after the 2017 general election.
But during the 2022 general election, just as she had done in 2017, Dr Zani, the former University of Nairobi sociology lecturer opted not to run for any elective position even though she was rumoured to be interested in the Kwale County Governor race.
However, for Dr Zani, the fact that Azimio la Umoja coalition leader Raila Odinga was a front runner in the former President Uhuru Kenyatta succession race, gave her a glimmer of hope. It was obvious that she would have landed top job in Azimio la Umoja Government. But things never worked as she had expected.
Over one year later, the former legislator has opted to take a very low political profile even as her supporters and rivals alike speculate on her whereabouts.
