President William Ruto has executed a significant cabinet reshuffle, signaling a strategic shift in his administration.

In a move aimed at addressing public discontent, Ruto has reassigned Aden Duale from the Ministry of Defence to oversee the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry. Soipan Tuya, formerly the Environment Cabinet Secretary, steps into the Defence role.

The reshuffle, announced to Parliament by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, comes as Ruto faces mounting pressure from youth groups, church leaders, and civil society organizations demanding a more reform-oriented cabinet.

The initial list of cabinet nominees, unveiled on July 19, faced criticism for retaining many established figures rather than introducing fresh perspectives.

The President’s attempt to realign his team is also influenced by political considerations as he prepares for the 2027 election.

The reshuffle follows a controversial cabinet announcement that saw the withdrawal of opposition leader Raila Odinga’s nominees, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the final cabinet composition.

Duale responded positively to his new assignment, expressing gratitude on social media.

He emphasized his commitment to sustainable environmental management and addressing climate change, reflecting on the nature of change through a Quranic quote.
