Pres Ruto

President William Ruto has donated Ksh1.5 million to support a family in Dagoretti whose son died while receiving treatment abroad. The pledge was made on Tuesday March 3 during his development tour of the area.

The Head of State made the promise after Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie appealed for help. The lawmaker explained that the family was struggling to clear a large hospital bill and bring the body of their son back home.

According to the MP the deceased man had travelled overseas for medical care. Sadly he passed away before completing treatment. The family was left with a hospital bill of Ksh1.5 million which they could not afford.

Speaking to residents the President directed his deputy comptroller to release the funds without delay. He said the money would clear the hospital charges support the repatriation process and assist with burial preparations.

Ruto assured the grieving mother that the government would stand with her during the difficult moment. He pointed to an official in his team and instructed him to ensure the full amount was handed over to the family.

The donation comes at a time when the Ministry of Health is tightening rules for Kenyans seeking treatment abroad. Two weeks ago the ministry urged patients to follow proper procedures before travelling.

Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr Ouma Olunga said patients must first be assessed by at least two doctors. The doctors must confirm that the condition cannot be treated locally before approval is granted.

After that assessment a formal letter is sent to the Social Health Authority for authorization. Patients are also encouraged to use overseas hospitals contracted under the scheme so they can benefit from insurance support.

Health officials say the new measures are meant to protect families from huge bills and confusion. They also aim to ensure that public funds are used responsibly and only for cases that truly require foreign treatment.

For the Dagoretti family the President’s donation offers relief after days of uncertainty. As they prepare to receive their son’s body they now have support to settle the hospital debt and give him a dignified farewell.
