President William Ruto announced that the government would lease part of the land Kenya Prisons Service owns to private investors. While launching the National Police Service and State Department of Correctional Services strategic plans 2023-2027 on December 13, the head of state declared that the government would monetise huge tracts of land the government owns.

The President outlined land commercialisation of underutilised lands, adding value and efficiency in government agencies. He said this would be achieved by partnering with the private sector, which would ensure maximum utilisation of such resources.

Ruto said the renting of prison land would become crucial in the production of food, among other essential commodities, and fall in line with the government’s reach to attain food security. He also announced that the Correctional Services Department would be included in a new leased vehicle program that will increase transport for both officers and inmates.

Ruto further committed the government to ensure that police officers have better housing and a better working environment, meaning the construction of 17,000 units of accommodation and wearing new police uniforms aimed at inspiring and motivating morale among police personnel.

In all, these changes exemplify how this administration is channelling resources toward more pragmatic projects, stimulating partnerships with the private sector, and fostering positive conditions among law enforcement bodies.
