The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a new weather alert. Kenyans should prepare for heavy rain and cold nights over the coming week.
Kennedy Thiong’o, the Director of Meteorological Services, shared the forecast, noting that the challenging weather conditions experienced over the past week are expected to continue. Rain will hit the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley. The Lake Victoria Basin and Northwestern Kenya will also be affected.
Saturday, July 27, will start with morning showers in several areas. Afternoon rains will follow in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi counties. Evening showers are also expected in these regions.
Sunday’s weather will be similar. Cloudy mornings will break into sunny intervals. Afternoon rains will hit high-ground areas. Evenings will be partly cloudy.
This pattern is expected to continue through Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. There is a chance of rainfall on Tuesday evening as well.
The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley will experience rain in the morning. Counties affected include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot. These areas will also see afternoon showers and thunderstorms, continuing into the evening on Saturday.
Temperatures will vary significantly across these regions. Highs will reach into the low 30s, while lows will approach freezing in some areas. The department’s weekly forecast indicates that parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Southeastern lowlands, and the Rift Valley will experience night temperatures dropping below 10 degrees. Nairobi will have temperatures ranging between 10 and 15 degrees. Similar conditions are expected in Embu, Machakos, Kiambu, Narok, Taita Taveta, Makueni, and parts of Laikipia.
Certain regions, including Tharaka Nithi, Nyeri, Meru, and Kajiado counties, will experience temperatures between 8 and 10 degrees. Maximum temperatures in these areas are set to reach the high 20s.
The Coastal region of Kenya will enjoy sunny intervals on Saturday. Temperatures will range from highs in the upper 20s to lows in the low 20s. However, Sunday will bring a drop in temperatures, with lows in the low teens and highs around 30 degrees.
The Kenya Meteorological Department advises residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions. The heavy rains and cold temperatures can lead to hazardous conditions, including flooding and health risks related to the cold weather. Farmers are also urged to protect their crops and livestock from the extreme weather.
