The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a seven-day weather forecast, warning of significant rainfall across various regions of the country from December 10 to December 16, 2024. Residents in affected areas are advised to prepare for possible disruptions due to wet conditions.
Rainfall is expected to persist in parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the South Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and the Coast.
Areas including Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Narok, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, and Bomet are forecasted to experience morning rains, followed by afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms in some locations.
The Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Central and North Rift Valley, covering counties such as Nandi, Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, and West Pokot, will primarily experience will experience occasional afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms during the forecast period.
In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, which includes Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi, the weather will consist of cloudy mornings transitioning to sunny intervals during the day.
Mountainous areas may experience occasional afternoon showers, while nights are predicted to remain partly cloudy with chance of night showers over some parts.
The South-eastern lowlands, comprising Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita-Taveta, and parts of Tana River, will largely experience sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy nights. There is a chance of showers over some parts during the forecast period.
However, counties like Kajiado and Taita-Taveta may witness occasional morning rains and afternoon showers.
Finally, the Coastal region, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and parts of Tana River, is expected to experience showers throughout the day and night in localized areas.
KMD advises residents in these regions to stay vigilant, monitor weather updates, and take precautions to mitigate potential challenges such as flooding and transport disruptions.
Farmers are encouraged to utilize the rains effectively while safeguarding crops from potential waterlogging. Motorists should exercise caution on slippery roads and during low visibility caused by heavy rainfall.
