The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a comprehensive five-day weather forecast beginning Thursday, September 12, 2024, warning residents across several regions to prepare for significant rainfall.
This forecast arrives as much of the country currently experiences cold, cloudy conditions, with sporadic heavy rains.
According to KMD, the areas most affected will include the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Rift Valley.
In the western parts of the Rift Valley, including the Lake Victoria Basin and the larger Rift Valley, counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot will experience morning rains in some areas, followed by sunny intervals.
The afternoons will bring showers and thunderstorms in scattered locations, with nighttime also having a chance of showers.
The Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County, will also see significant rainfall. Counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi are forecasted to experience cloudy mornings that break into sunny intervals, with occasional showers over high-ground areas.
Afternoons will see a chance of isolated showers, with evenings generally remaining partly cloudy.
Residents in these regions are advised to remain vigilant as the heavy rains could lead to flooding and other weather-related disruptions.
Authorities are urging communities to stay informed through local weather updates and to prepare accordingly for potential impacts on daily activities and infrastructure.
