City lawyer Danstan Omari has suffered a big blow in his quest to become Kenya’s next Director of Public Prosecutions after President William Ruto nominated Renson Mulele Ingonga for the position.

Omar, the flashy and popular lawyer was seen by many as the front runner for the position which fell vacant following the exit of Noordin Haji.

Haji was nominated and subsequently appointed by President Ruto as the new Director General of the National Intelligence Service. This follows the retirement of his predecessor Major General ( Rtd) Philip Wachira Kameru.

Having handled some of the most high profile cases over the last few years, Omari built a name for himself as one of the finest lawyers in the country.

He is a popular figure on the Kenyan TV screens where he also commentates on local politics. But Dr Ruto’s decision to overlook him in the appointment of the new DPP will no doubt anger Omari’s supporters.

But for Ingonga, he is inching closer to taking over one of the most powerful offices on land.
