Collins Otieno, a serving Administration Police (AP) officer based in Nairobi, has achieved a remarkable academic milestone after graduating with First Class Honours from Kenyatta University, a feat that underscores resilience, sacrifice and unwavering determination.

Otieno’s journey to academic excellence was marked by years of delay and hardship. After completing his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education in 2008 with a B-minus grade, financial constraints stood in the way of his immediate entry into university. As the firstborn in his family, he made the difficult decision to put his education on hold in order to support his household, a responsibility that shaped the course of his early adult life.

In 2013, he joined the Administration Police, now part of the National Police Service, seeking stable employment to help his family. While the job provided financial relief, it came with demanding schedules that left little room for personal advancement. Despite this, Otieno never abandoned his academic ambitions.

Fourteen years after completing high school, he enrolled at Kenyatta University, embarking on a demanding balancing act between police duties, family responsibilities and university studies. There were moments when he reported to lectures or examinations straight from night duty, often battling exhaustion but refusing to surrender his dream. His discipline and commitment eventually paid off when he emerged top of his class during graduation on December 19.

Beyond the classroom, Otieno has built an impressive professional profile. With over a decade of service, he has gained extensive experience in security operations and fraud investigations and is a Certified Fraud Examiner. He is currently attached to the Kenya Revenue Authority’s Security of Government Buildings Unit, where he continues to serve with distinction.

Otieno attributes his success to the consistent support of his family, colleagues and lecturers. His story stands as a powerful testament to the belief that while dreams may be delayed, determination and perseverance can ultimately turn them into reality.
