The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has confirmed the arrest of several suspects after Irungu Nyakera, a former Principal Secretary and Nairobi gubernatorial candidate, claimed his Kisumu hotel was attacked by over 100 goons at around 5 am on March 11, 2026.

Speaking after the incident, Nyakera said that the attackers damaged property , injured staff, and tied up a female security guard.

He revealed that he fired warning shots to disperse the group and contacted the police, but they arrived hours later.

Sources have alleged that the incident is linked to a protracted dispute over the property, with Nyakera alleging the attack is politically motivated.

Nyakera revealed that he estimates losses of around Ksh50 million due to vandalism and disruption of operations and vowed to continue operating the hotel, citing staff and guest dependencies.

On March 12, 2026, Mr. Kanja said that the National Police Service is working to ensure that the use of goons does not continue until 2027.

The IG revealed that several suspects are in custody, adding that the police are searching for their accomplices who are currently on the run.
