Almost one month after he was vetted and approved by the joint Parliament Security Committee for appointment as Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja is yet to take over.

Kanja was nominated by President William Ruto as the new police chief to succeed Japheth Koome who resigned at the height of anti-government protests by the Gen Zs.

But for the man who has spent four decades in the police service, the continued delay in swearing him as the new police chief means that something could be brewing.

Given the concerns that were raised about his age, Kanja who is already 60 years could be staring at retirement.

Could it be that the government and especially President Ruto is buying time for the former GSU commandant to exit on age grounds?

For over one month, Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli has been the acting IG.

The fact that the President is in no hurry to appoint Kanja as police chief means that there is some game that is being played.

But with the Head of Public Service Felix Koskei issuing a fresh directive on retirement age, Kanja’s future is hanging in the balance given that he is get to be sworn-in as police chief.
