In a significant development, three suspects who visited the late world record holder Kelvin Kiptum’s home days before his death have been arrested. The arrests took place in Elegeyo Marakwet, with the suspects temporarily detained at Kaptagat Police Station until 11 am.
The Sub-county Commander, Keiyo South Abdullahi Dahir, confirmed the arrests and stated that they were yet to apprehend one suspect. The trio was arrested at the Kaptagat Police Station and is being transferred to the County Criminal Investigations Officer, Elgeyo Marakwet, for further questioning.
The arrests came after Kiptum’s father positively identified the suspects. Samson Cheruyoit had urged the police to track the trio, who failed to identify themselves during their visit to his home at Chepsamo village, Kaptarakwa ward, Keiyo South Constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet County, four days before Kiptum’s tragic death.
The visit had raised suspicions, leading to calls for a thorough investigation. The vehicle used by the suspects has also been apprehended and is in police custody. Further investigations are expected to be conducted at the Elgeyo Marakwet County Commissioner’s office in Iten.
The arrests mark a significant step in unraveling the circumstances surrounding Kelvin Kiptum’s death, providing hope for justice for the late athlete and his family.
