Police in Kisumu have arrested six people suspected of raiding a hotel in Mamboleo estate and robbing guests, including a foreigner.
Kisumu County police commander Titus Yoma said the suspects colluded with a watchman at Ritz Hotel and stole assorted property.
The robbers also stole an iPad belonging to an American national, who was injured in the attack.
“Police officers, acting on a tip-off, waylaid the suspects, who had packed the items on a pickup (truck),” Mr Yoma said.
RISING CRIME
Mamboleo estate has seen a spike in robberies and burglaries in recent months.
Last Saturday, a house belonging to a Nation Media Group employee was broken into and several household items stolen, including a laptop, television set and gas cooker.
The thugs entered the house through the kitchen window in the wee hours. The incident was reported to the Mamboleo police post.
On Thursday, Mr Yoma said the six suspects arrested are among a gang that has been committing robberies in the area.
“We discovered a store where some of the stolen goods were kept. The house is located near Uzima University at Kanyakwar B,” the police officer said.
COURT
He said investigations were under way and the suspects will be charged.
Kisumu County CID boss Geoffrey Kathurima urged the public to share any information they may have about the robberies.
Mr Yoma said police were pursuing the watchman suspected of colluding with the suspects in the hotel raid.
