A sombre mood has engulfed Chepngaina village in Bomet after the sudden death of Ms. Evaline Tonui, a woman whose selfless acts of community service brought her into the limelight five years ago. Ms. Tonui, who passed away a few days ago, was renowned for her efforts in repairing potholes along the road to Tenwek Hospital, a task she took upon herself after a personal tragedy.
In 2018, Evaline Tonui made headlines when she decided to repair the potholes that had plagued the road for over three years. The poor condition of the road had led to numerous accidents, including one that tragically claimed the life of her husband.
He was struck by a lorry while trying to evade the potholes. This personal loss galvanized her to take action.
Ms. Tonuiâs determination to fix the road was further strengthened when she witnessed a sad incident involving a patient being transported from Tenwek Hospital.
The patient, who had recently undergone surgery, was in significant discomfort due to the roadâs potholes. Ms. Tonui recalled how the urgency of the situation and the patientâs pleas to avoid slowing down motivated her to address the issue head-on.
Sadly, Evaline Tonui passed away two weeks ago. To honor her memory, the community has organized a fundraiser which will be held tomorrow, June 2nd, at Tenwek AGC at 3 PM. She will be laid to rest on June 5th at her home in Chepngaina.
