Pulse Music Video Awards (PMVA) was Friday, March 5, held at the Standard Group headquarters along Mombasa Road, Nairobi. Hosted in line with Covid-19 protocols, the gala – which is in its sixth edition – is the first major entertainment awards show in the capital since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Crystal Asige was crowned queen as she bagged the highly coveted Female Video of the Year Award in a highly competitive group that featured 2019’s winner Nadia Mukami, fast-rising personality Tanasha Donna and songbirds, Femi One and Fena Gitu. “I don’t like being categorized or judged because I always end up being the underdog. Wherever I go, I am always stereotyped as a young, black, disabled girl. This award puts me on the radar as a bonafide queen. I dedicate it to my mother and anyone who believed in me,” said Asige.

Speaking at the ceremony, CEO Orlando Lyomu reiterated Standard Group’s commitment to supporting the creative community. “PMVA has been an integral part of the Standard Group’s entertainment brand since its establishment in 2015. It is meant to recognize, support and celebrate the contribution of artists in the industry. 2020 was a challenging year,” said Lyomu, “Artists, however, kept us entertained with unprecedented innovations in virtual concerts, album releases and bands. Rewarding their efforts is the least we could do.”

A message echoed by PMVA judge and cinematographer Jibril Blessing, who lauded the support and noted that Kenyan music videos are now cleaner and neatly executed. “We didn’t have so many cameras a couple of years back, but things are changing… Judging these categories was tough… We should all watch out for PMVA as it is the only platform celebrating such creatives.”
