Renowned Kenyan lawyer PLO Lumumba has finally addressed the growing outcry among Kenyans regarding the issue of “over taxation” following the emergence of the Finance Bill 2023.

Lumumba emphasized the importance for leaders to empathize with and engage in dialogue with the people when they express their concerns and grievances about excessive taxation. This situation is currently unfolding in Kenya.

Directing his message to President William Ruto, Lumumba called upon him to attentively listen to the people and work collaboratively to find viable solutions to the alleged problem of over-taxation.

In a social media post on May 29, Lumumba highlighted that while governments rely on taxation to function, it is essential for them to respond when citizens protest against what they perceive as burdensome taxation. He further suggested that the Kenyan government may be faced with an array of challenges, urging President Ruto to address this situation.

Lumumba’s tweet read, “Governments are sustained by taxation, but when citizens voice their discontent with ‘over taxation,’ it is the duty of the government to listen and engage with them to seek resolutions. The Kenyan government may be grappling with multiple issues. President Ruto, listen and adapt. @WilliamsRuto @CBKKenya.”

The Finance Bill 2023 has sparked widespread discussions since it emerged a few weeks ago. Numerous Kenyans, led by Azimio la Umoja leaders, have voiced their dissatisfaction, asserting that the bill does not favor ordinary citizens and instead imposes additional taxes.

One particular aspect of the bill that has stirred strong emotions among Kenyans is the introduction of a 3% housing levy. Many citizens oppose this levy, arguing that they already own homes or that housing is not a priority given the current economic situation.

Okiya Omtata has already expressed his intention to challenge the bill in court if it successfully passes through parliament.
