Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza does not qualify for impeachment, going by the changes Members of the Meru County Assembly have raised against her, Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has said.
The ward reps on Wednesday impeached the county chief for the second time in 10 months, accusing her of among others, misappropriation and misuse of county resources.
Others include nepotism and bullying of fellow leaders among other charges, which Kaluma says are not enough grounds to have her sent home.
According to him, a governor can be impeached for gross violation of the constitution, the law or gross misconduct, and he believes none of the allegations raised against her amount to these.
He says that the MCAs need to know what they are doing before rushing to impeach the governor, suggesting that in his opinion, the impeachment is headed nowhere.
“A County Governor can be impeached for “Gross” violation of the Constitution, “Gross” violation of the law or “Gross” misconduct,” the opposition lawmaker said in a statement on X on Friday.
“Members of County Assembly of Meru need urgent education on the meaning of “Gross” and why it’s used here even as they rant “impeach Governor Kawira”,” he added.
But there are also those who believe that Mwangaza’s impeachment has merit, among them Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, who argues that because of her conduct, she should be sent home.
“When Senate let her off last time, I predicted she would be brought back. For sanity if Meru County, it is time she takes a back seat,” Cherargei, a member of the ruling Kenya Kwanza, told Daily Nation on Friday.
Some female governors have thrown their weight behind Mwangaza as she battles the second attempt to send her home, these being Nakuru governor Susan Kihika and Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga).
