If you frequently visit social media pages you must have come across Kamande Wa Kioi at some point. He is a popular Kikuyu benga musician who has moved from grass to fame through hard work and determination within the shortest period of time. Some hours ago he was at kameme FM where he talked about his life story especially how he joined police force and why he later resigned and concentrated on his music career.
In production circles, Kamande is known as the guitar wizard whose fingers were created for the chords. This is a result of how he plays a guitar with so much experience leaving many happy. He said that he started playing guitar when he was 12 years old out of passion and it became his breakthrough in life. He added that he doesn’t like seeing or hearing anyone making jokes with a guitar since he is whom he is today because of it.
On joining police force it happened after Kenya police band come to sing in their village but unfortunately they were singing in kiswahili and English which didn’t attract villagers. They gave Kioi a chance to sing and immediately he started playing guitar and singing in Kikuyu he attracted many people and the show was full. The police band accommodated him in their band and immediately he was recruited as a police officer.
During his stint as a constable, Kamande was a guitarist with Kenya Police Band. He also played guitar for the Police Welfare Band before he was transferred to the Dog Section in 1993 and the band died on the same year. With no band to play for, Kamande was assigned duties as a dog handler. He worked for one year and then resigned.
According to him, he resigned after three years immediately his grandmother died since she had left a curse that nobody in his family was allowed to be a policeman. When he asked his father about it, his father said it was true and she said that because out of seven children his grandmother had five were killed by a police officer during the war and she ended up hating police officers. Immediately the grandmother died he had no other choice but to resign and concentrate on his music career.
He also didn’t like how people feared him because he was a police officer and he wrote a resignation letter saying he was going abroad to further his studies. Watch the full video below and share your views with us.
