Medical experts have suggested that students at St. Theresa’s Eregi Girls School in Kakamega County may be experiencing panic attacks, commonly known as hysteria. Recent tests conducted on samples collected from the school have ruled out any infections, thus dispelling initial suspicions.

The students at the school have exhibited symptoms such as weakened limbs and difficulty in walking. Dr. Bernard Wesonga, the Health Executive of Kakamega County, has indicated that the students who fell ill on Monday and Tuesday before being admitted may have developed psychological complications.

According to Dr. Wesonga, the students’ condition could be attributed to a psychological issue referred to as hysteria. The tests conducted did not detect any pathogens that would suggest an infection.

“We conducted culture and sensitivity tests on the students admitted to local hospitals, and there were no infections whatsoever. The children were suffering from psychological problems that could have induced panic among them,” Dr. Wesonga explained. He further elaborated that it is possible for students to experience immobility and weakness in their limbs, especially when they are in a state of panic. Addressing this issue requires providing guidance and counseling to help them cope with their psychological struggles.

The situation at St. Theresa’s Eregi Girls School has raised concerns and prompted medical investigations to ensure the well-being of the students. While infections have been ruled out, it is crucial to provide the necessary psychological support and care to help the affected learners overcome their challenges.
