In a video making rounds on social media, Pastor James Maina Ng’ang’a of Neno Evangelism Church has urged his followers to boycott purchasing phones priced at over Ksh 20,000.

Pastor Ng’ang’a claimed that buying phones above Ksh 20,000 would lead his followers to worry about how to repay loans taken to acquire such devices. He questioned the wisdom of spending on phones with such hefty price tags.

“Why would you buy a Ksh 20,000 phone? Maybe Safaricom can lend you, and you pay every day. Perhaps you need to have a certain level of foolishness. A Ksh 20,000 phone – if you carry it, your mind will be occupied by that phone,” expressed Pastor Ng’ang’a in the video.

Interestingly, Pastor Ng’ang’a boasted of personally using a phone valued at over Ksh 240,000, contradicting his advice to followers to avoid expensive phones.

“Mine costs Ksh 240,000; someone gave me Ksh 160,000 to buy a phone, and I added some money. So, why would you want to buy a phone? You know, I don’t even use a phone. I use it for WhatsApp, Facebook, and YouTube; I don’t use the other apps. But because of my class, when we go there, I place it on the table,” added Pastor Ng’ang’a.

The pastor, known for his controversial teachings, has previously attracted attention for rebuking individuals, including his recent public confrontation with a woman named Naomi Maina, whom he claimed to be his daughter.

Naomi Maina later emerged, acknowledging her connection to Pastor Ng’ang’a and expressing respect for him while highlighting her desire to avoid unnecessary public discussion about their relationship.
