A section of Mt. Kenya MPs is urging President William Ruto to guarantee that if Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is impeached, his replacement will come from their region. Led by Gatundu North MP Elijah Njoroge Kururia, these MPs voiced their concerns during a press briefing ahead of the National Assembly debate regarding a no-confidence motion against Gachagua.

The motion stems from allegations of corruption, tribalism, and political sabotage. Notably, one major accusation claims Gachagua demanded KSh 8 billion as an “exit package” from President Ruto after allegedly banging the table in a heated State House meeting when Ruto denied his request.

MPs calling for his removal argue that Gachagua’s divisive politics have damaged the government’s unity and alienated key regions. While they express no objection to his impeachment, they emphasize that any replacement must maintain Mt. Kenya’s political influence in national leadership. This debate is anticipated to bring significant tension in the assembly.
