General Charles Kahariri, the new Chief of Defence Forces, on Saturday visited the Mai Mahiu Disaster Recovery Center to check on the efforts to recover from the recent flash floods. These floods have caused loss of life, displaced many people, and damaged infrastructure.

General Kahariri was welcomed by Major General John Nkoimo, the head of the Border Security Command and the leader of the National Floods Coordination Centre and hosted by Governor Susan Kihika.

During his visit, General Kahariri learned about the ongoing search and recovery work for the victims of the flash floods in Mai Mahiu. So far, over 300 people have been displaced, 112 have been injured, and 52 have died. The search teams are still looking for people who are missing.

Due to the seriousness of this disaster is so large, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) joined the multi-agency team on April 30, 2024. This team includes different government groups, the County Government of Nakuru, and other organizations. KDF added its skills and resources to help with the search and recovery work.

General Kahariri said that KDF’s involvement is part of its role in helping other government agencies during emergencies and disasters. He added that KDF is working closely with the multi-agency teams to help the families who have lost loved ones and those who are now without a home.

General Kahariri met with some of the victims who are staying at Ngeya Girls Secondary School, then visited some of the areas hit hard by the floods, like the Georges and Magathi bridges. He also saw the preparations for the new rescue center, which will provide shelter for the displaced families.
