Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has joined the growing number of leaders calling for justice following the controversial death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody. In a statement issued on Monday, June 9, Governor Natembeya expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a “profound tragedy” and a stark reflection of systemic issues within the law enforcement sector.

“It is with profound sadness and deep concern that I condemn the tragic and untimely death of Albert Ojwang while in custody at the Central Police Station in Nairobi,” Natembeya stated.

“This heartbreaking incident is not only a personal loss to those who knew and loved him, but also a chilling reminder of a troubling pattern that threatens our nation’s commitment to the fundamental rights of every citizen.”

He emphasized that no Kenyan or any human being should lose their life while under the protection of security agencies.

Natembeya underscored the need for the justice system to uphold the sanctity of life and called for a transparent and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death.Ojwang, a popular social media influencer, reportedly died under unclear circumstances last week. Conflicting reports from police suggest he either passed away while in custody or upon arrival at Mbagathi Hospital.

These discrepancies have fueled public outrage and prompted demands for answers from civil society and legal bodies, including the Law Society of Kenya.

Governor Natembeya stressed that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.

“Anything less would be a betrayal of the values we hold dear,” he said, extending condolences to Ojwang’s family and calling for reforms to restore trust in the country’s security institutions.
