The National Intelligence Service (NIS), working alongside the SOG elite unit from the Anti-Stockpiling Police Service (APS), successfully disrupted a terror plot targeting Nairobi during the holy month of Ramadan. Officials say the operation dismantled a network linked to the Somalia-based extremist group, Al-Shabaab.
The suspects were apprehended at a Nairobi safe house as they were allegedly preparing to execute a coordinated attack. During the raid, security forces recovered a substantial cache of weapons and logistical supplies, highlighting the seriousness of the planned assault.
Among the items seized were five AK-47 assault rifles, 20 magazines containing 600 rounds of ammunition, six hand grenades, and a Makarov pistol with 24 rounds of 9mm bullets. Security analysts note that such an arsenal could have enabled prolonged attacks with devastating consequences.
In addition to weaponry, officers found medical supplies, including elastic bandages, vitamin K3 injections, diclofenac (Powermole), paracetamol (Tekomol), and Nexstep 40mg, as well as four disposable syringes and two cartons of date fruit. These materials indicate the cell’s preparedness to manage injuries and sustain prolonged operations.
“This haul is alarming. In the wrong hands, these weapons and supplies could have led to widespread violence and civilian casualties. Intervening in time was critical,” said a senior security official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Intelligence gathered in recent days revealed that the operatives intended to carry out attacks during Ramadan and possibly engage in kidnappings, a tactic previously used by Al-Shabaab to draw attention and generate ransom.
The operation followed weeks of meticulous surveillance, tracking communications, financial activities, and suspect movements. NIS officers reportedly decrypted encrypted messages that hinted at an imminent Ramadan attack, prompting swift action from tactical units once the plot’s location and timing were confirmed.
Kenya’s counter-terrorism strategy has increasingly prioritized prevention over reaction, a shift informed by lessons from past attacks. The successful interdiction underscores the effectiveness of coordinated intelligence and tactical operations.
Authorities are now analyzing seized devices and documents to map the network’s financing, recruitment, and potential external connections, as the investigation continues.
