The Nairobi County Government is set to embark on the construction of a Miraa market in the Ziwani area, Starehe Sub-county, following approval from local traders during a recent public participation event.
The County Executive Committee Member for Business and Hustler Opportunities, Dr Anastasia Nyalita, assured traders that the Miraa market is a key priority for the Governor Sakaja-led administration to provide a more conducive environment for Miraa businesses.
“We are committed to constructing 20 modern markets across the county. So far, we have completed four markets—Karen, Mutuini, Kahawa West, and Jujo—and this will be the fifth. Once the market is complete, we will have a structured plan to allocate spaces to the traders,” Dr. Nyalita stated.
Dr. Nyalita also praised the traders for their active participation and feedback during the public forum.
Ms. Jane Wangùi, the County Chief Officer for Markets and Trade, confirmed that the budget for the Miraa market had already been set and that all plans were in place to begin construction.
“The proposed market will feature various amenities, including a social hall, a lactation room, a ramp for people with disabilities, a backup generator, an ICT hub with free WiFi, a perimeter wall for security, and cold rooms for food preservation,” Ms. Wangùi explained.
She emphasized that the construction would proceed as scheduled, with the contractor expected to meet the set deadlines.
The Member of the County Assembly for Utawala Ward, Said Karani, along with former MCAs Doris Kanario and Mberia hailed the project stating: “We’ve been advocating for the construction of a Miraa market for the last ten years, and we are grateful to the Governor for securing the necessary budget to make this vision come true.”
Mr. Joel Muli, the County Director for Markets, assured the traders that the market would adhere to all required standards, with additional space to accommodate other traders beyond the Miraa vendors.
Mr. David Githaiga, the County Assistant Director for Markets, presented the market’s proposed layout, including a loading and offloading bay, and the general outlook of the site.
