A Nairobi taxi driver who was assaulted and humiliated by four drunk women in Kilimani has come forward to demand justice, weeks after the incident left him traumatised and unable to work normally.
The incident happened at night while the driver was waiting to pick up a client near a popular entertainment spot. According to the driver, the women did not request his cab directly. Instead, they attempted to force themselves into the vehicle, claiming it was suitable for them to use.
The driver explained that his trip had already started and cancelling it would have affected his work. This led to a confrontation that quickly turned violent. The women began hurling insults at him, drawing the attention of bystanders.
As the situation escalated, the women vandalised his car. One broke the rear wiper while another damaged the side mirror. The driver was also physically assaulted as the women hit him repeatedly. Despite the provocation, he chose not to fight back, fearing the situation would worsen and be turned against him.
Members of the public tried to intervene, with some wanting to retaliate against the women. The driver stopped them, saying any violence would later be blamed on him. A concerned witness reported the matter to the police, and the women were briefly arrested.
The driver later went to Kilimani Police Station to record a statement. However, he says the process was frustrating. Officers asked for video evidence and witnesses, which he did not have at the time. He was later informed that the suspects could not be held for more than 24 hours and were released without charges.
