Boniface Mwangi, the renowned activist and former Starehe parliamentary candidate, has questioned the effectiveness of Azimio la Umoja in addressing the issue of police brutality in the country. In a tweet posted on Tuesday, Mwangi accused Azimio of being good at calling for press conferences to react to the killings, but doing nothing to follow up on the matter through the legislative institutions.

“Azimio is very good at calling for Press Conferences TO REACT but does zero institutional follow-ups. Why hasn’t Azimio used the Senate and Parliament to summon the IG of Police Koome and CS Kindiki to come and explain why the police killed innocent people? Also, sue the IG & CS,” Mwangi wrote.

Mwangi was referring to the recent incidents of police violence that have claimed the lives of several Kenyans, including two brothers from Embu who were allegedly tortured to death by police officers last week. Azimio la Umoja, the coalition led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta, has condemned the killings and called for justice for the victims. However, Mwangi argued that Azimio has not used its majority in both houses of parliament to hold the police leadership accountable for their actions.

Mwangi also challenged Azimio to sue the Inspector General of Police Hillary Koome and the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government Kithure Kindiki, who are responsible for overseeing the police service. He suggested that this would be a more effective way of seeking justice and preventing further killings than holding press conferences.
