A mother from Kitui South, Elizabeth Makau, is heartbroken after losing her two daughters in a tragic road accident on Friday, September 13, 2024.

Her daughters, Susan Mueni and Brigitte Vaati, were hit by a speeding vehicle while walking to school early in the morning. The driver responsible fled the scene, leaving the family in deep pain.

Susan, a Form Three student, and Brigitte, a Form One student, were both day scholars at Kyoani Mixed Secondary School.

That morning, Elizabeth had woken up early to prepare breakfast for her children, as she did every day. She recalled the painful moment they left home just minutes before 6 a.m. for their usual 40-minute walk to school.

The accident occurred near Kyoani market, along the Kitui-Kibwezi Road. Tragically, the two sisters were not alone. They were walking with four of their cousins, all of whom were also hit by the vehicle and died on the spot.

The news of the accident spread quickly, and Elizabeth was informed soon after it happened.

Elizabeth said that when she received the phone call, she sensed something was terribly wrong. Fighting back tears, she described how she rushed to the scene in panic.

Her worst fears were confirmed when she saw her daughters lying lifeless on the road, surrounded by pools of blood. The sight was too much to bear, and the pain was overwhelming.

The tragic loss of six young lives has left the entire family and community in deep sorrow. Many have expressed their condolences and are standing by the families in this difficult time.

The driver who caused the accident is still at large, and the families are calling on the authorities to act swiftly to bring justice.
