Gatundu North member of parliament Elijah Njoroge Kururia shared an update with his constituents today regarding the impending impeachment proceedings against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in the Senate. Kururia believes Gachagua will not prevail in his defense against the multiple charges leveled against him and will likely be removed from office.
In light of this, Kururia playfully encouraged the people of Mathira to take the day off from work and spend it practicing celebratory songs instead.
He jokingly told them to prepare to give Gachagua a warm hometown welcome when he returns later tonight after the expected guilty verdict.
Kururia tried to make light of what is undoubtedly a tense and concerning situation for both Gachagua personally and the larger Kikuyu community that supported his successful election bid.
His joking advice to basically throw Gachagua a sarcastic going away party seems to be his way of voicing skepticism in genuine grievances against the Deputy President. It also could be intended as a means of rallying Gachagua’s base during a time of uncertain political standing.
While Kururia clearly believes the impeachment effort is likely to succeed, his message hints at disapproval or distrust in the motives behind the charges. His casual language toward constituents also downplays the seriousness of the matter.
The statements provide insight into the perception of impeachment among Gachagua’s allies as potentially being a partisan or personality-driven move against him rather than being based solely on ethical concerns over his past conduct and dealings.
Kururia attempted to reassure Gachagua’s hometown community in Mathira during a difficult situation by putting a positive, hopeful spin on circumstances through humor and camaraderie. Whether intentional or not, his tone also risks giving the impression of not taking the allegations seriously enough.
