The National Assembly will adjourn on Thursday for the long recess during the festive season.
In a communication to the House, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula announced the suspension of committee sittings during the long recess.
“As notified on Thursday’s Order Paper, the House is scheduled to proceed for its long recess from December 6 to February 10, 2025 in accordance with the approved calendar of the Third Session,” he stated.
Wetang’ula noted that Thursday’s sitting marked the conclusion of the regular sitting of the Third Session of the 13th Parliament and “the beginning of a well-deserved break.”
He noted that during the session, the House transacted various key business including critical Bills, treaties, inquiries and approvals for appointments
He added that the House also undertook its oversight and representation role through statements and questions to Cabinet Secretaries, which he said continue to elicit great interest not just in Parliament but also from the general public.
“In keeping with established practice, the Clerk is preparing comprehensive a report detailing activities of the House in the Third Session,” he stated.
Wetang’ula pointed out that in line with the approved calendar, regular sittings of House committees ought to suspend sittings from December 16 until January 26, 2025.
However, he directed an early suspension of committee sittings effective December 6.
This variation is intended to allow Members to attend the East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games to be held in Mombasa County from December 7 to 18, 2024, and thereafter to attend to the constituency duties,” he explained.
“This will also allow time for parliamentary staff to take their annual leave in preparation for the Fourth Session.”
Wetang’ula said any committee that may need to conduct any committee business during the said period must obtain express permission from the Speaker’s Office upon a written request.
“Should the need arise for the House to transact any urgent matter, Members will be recalled for Special Sittings Pursuant to Standing Order 29,” he stated.
The Speaker thanked the leadership of the House, Members, and staff for the diligence exhibited and commitment during the session.
