A fierce showdown is brewing between Members of Parliament (MPs) and Treasury Principal Secretary (PS) Chris Kiptoo over the mysterious withdrawal of over Sh100 million from the Inua Jamii programme. The National Assembly’s Committee on Social Protection has summoned Kiptoo to explain the controversial budget cut, which has raised concerns about the welfare of vulnerable Kenyans relying on the financial assistance provided by the programme.
The Inua Jamii initiative, which supports elderly citizens, orphans, and other vulnerable groups, was expected to receive full funding. However, the shocking budget reduction has sparked widespread anger and confusion. Despite multiple invitations, PS Kiptoo failed to appear before the committee, delegating Treasury Director of Accounting Services, Johnah Wala, to attend instead. This move, however, only fueled the MPs’ frustration.
In a bold move, the committee invoked Article 125 of the Constitution, compelling Kiptoo to attend the next session. The PS now faces the possibility of arrest or a hefty Sh500,000 fine if he fails to show up. The committee’s chair, Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a, did not hold back in expressing her displeasure, calling Kiptoo’s absence a “deliberate disregard” for the parliamentary process.
The MPs are demanding a clear explanation for the withdrawal of the Sh100 million, which they argue could significantly impact the effectiveness of the Inua Jamii programme. The programme, which plays a crucial role in supporting the country’s most vulnerable citizens, has now become the center of a heated political and financial battle.
As the clock ticks down to the next session, all eyes are on Kiptoo, who now faces immense pressure to explain the budget cut or risk further legal and political consequences. The controversy surrounding the Inua Jamii funds has ignited public outrage, with many questioning the government’s commitment to protecting its most vulnerable citizens.
