Mourners were tricked in a WhatsApp group created to raise money for the funeral of actress Alice Wairimu (Alicia Nimo).
The scammer requested admin access, downgraded others, and altered the donation number to his own. A group member told TUKO.co.ke that members only learned, about the scam after over KSh 6,000 had been transferred!
As Kenyans continue to mourn the untimely death of Tahidi High actress Alice Wairimu, better known by her stage name Alicia Nimo, a shocking incident has shocked her fans, relatives, and friends.
By posing as the group administrator, a man who is believed to have been a member of a WhatsApp group created to organize funeral donations allegedly cheated mourners out of KSh 6,000.
The gathering was made up of Nimo’s followers, close family members, and fellow actresses who gathered together to support her departure, according to TUKO.co.ke.
The case took an unexpected turn when the suspect requested to be added as an administrator, claiming that he wanted to add more members to aid with contributions.
After gaining admin access, he demoted other administrators. He then altered the initial fundraising message, replacing the official paybill and phone number with his own.
Why do Alicia Nimo’s mourners find it hard to believe? Users who accidentally sent their donations to the wrong number have posted numerous M-Pesa transaction messages.
