Seth Nyakio, a 23-year-old woman, left her mother Lucy Njeri’s house in Kamakis, Kiambu, to visit a friend in Thika town. Lucy, who is a nominated Member of the County Assembly (MCA) in Kirinyaga, spoke to local media about her heartbreak. She said if she had known it would be the last time she saw her daughter alive, she would have tried to stop her from going.

Lucy expressed deep sadness over the violent way her daughter died and criticized the slow investigation by local police. She explained, “Seth had just graduated from Zetech University in Thika and was looking for a job. She often visited friends in Thika.”

On the day she disappeared, Seth told her mother she would be visiting a friend in the Biafra estate and promised to keep in touch. They had a very close relationship and shared everything. After giving Seth some pocket money, Lucy said goodbye.

They spoke briefly after 9 PM, and Seth assured her that she was safe. But when Lucy tried to call her later that evening, Seth’s phone was off. Concerned, Lucy began to worry around 10 PM on October 13, realizing it was unusual for her daughter to not respond for so long.

The next morning, Lucy decided to drive to Thika to look for Seth. Before she could leave, she received a shocking call from a woman who claimed to be Seth’s friend.

The caller delivered the heartbreaking news: “Your daughter has been found dead.” Lucy was devastated and couldn’t believe what she heard.

Following the friend’s directions, Lucy arrived at a rented room in Biafra estate. There, she found her worst fears confirmed. “My daughter was inside the room… naked, with blood on her body and signs of strangulation. I called her name, but she didn’t respond,” Lucy recalled, filled with grief.

It felt as if the ground had disappeared beneath her. “I screamed and collapsed,” she said, as friends and family quickly gathered to support her. Police arrived soon after, examined the scene, and took Seth’s body to the General Kago mortuary.

As Lucy prepares to bury her daughter, she expressed frustration over how the police are handling the investigation. “I feel disappointed that they are treating this case casually,” she said.

Lucy remembered Seth as her only child, a beautiful person who brought joy into her life. “We shared many happy and sad moments together,” she added.

Thika West police chief, Mr. Laurence Muchangi, confirmed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is looking into the case. They have interviewed the friend who found Seth and are searching for a male suspect believed to be involved in her death.

Authorities think this man may have lured Seth to Thika and harmed her after being rejected by her. Mr. Muchangi noted that there were signs of a struggle and possible sexual assault on Seth’s body.

“We are committed to solving this case,” he assured the public, asking for patience as they work to bring justice for Seth.

This tragedy follows an earlier incident in which Seth survived a serious car accident in April, after being hit by a vehicle in Nairobi.

Police had tracked down the car and its owner during that investigation.
