In a sharp rebuke, Moses Kuria, the Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Trade, has publicly told Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that he has no sympathy for his current political predicament. Kuria’s remarks, laced with sarcasm, suggested that Gachagua was warned against attempting to enter the 2022 elections without the support of a strong political party but ignored the advice.

“Now you want us to cry with you into the opposition? Forget about it,” Kuria stated, in reference to Gachagua’s growing frustrations over internal divisions within the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition and perceived diminishing influence.

Kuria’s comments highlight the brewing tensions within the Kenya Kwanza government, with some leaders feeling increasingly sidelined. Gachagua has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with certain factions in the coalition, fearing they may be undermining his role and political standing ahead of future elections.

Kuria’s pointed criticism underscores the importance of political strategy and alliances in Kenya’s competitive political landscape. As Deputy President, Gachagua had risen to power through the Kenya Kwanza coalition led by President William Ruto. However, the coalition, which brought together several political entities, has shown cracks as ambitions and disagreements emerge post-election.

With 2027 elections approaching, Kuria’s message serves as a reminder that political survival often hinges on strong party backing, and entering the fray alone could lead to marginalization within Kenya’s complex political arena.
