Prison officers at the Shimo la Tewa Maximum Prison have seized a letter that cult leader Paul Mackenzie wrote ordering his followers to starve until death even while they are being held captive.

The letter, dated July 22, was reportedly sent by Kelvin Sudi Asena, also known as Alfred Asena, one of Mackenzie’s close pals.

The letter had Mackenzie’s approval.

According to the director of public prosecution, the letter’s contents are “dangerous.”

The letter’s authorship by Asena has already been proven by forensic document examination at the DCI.

During her statement before the court, Assistant DPP Jami Yamina stated, “The letter was recently intercepted during the routine enforcement of prison safety, security, and discipline.”

At the hearing, Yamina spoke in support of the State’s demand to hold Mackenzie and the other 27 co-accused individuals for an additional six months.

“The letter in question contains religious instruction. The information offers a rationale for dying on a fast,” he stated.

Asena, the letter’s author, allegedly routinely confers with Mackenzie while they are seated next to one another in court, according to the State.

Additionally, he like to keep Mackenzie under control as possible.

According to a supporting affidavit from Chief Inspector Raphael Wanjohi, the primary investigator into the Shakahola massacre, they believe the letter contains religious instructions coming from an extreme belief system.

“Upon analysis of the cumulative content, the investigators are of the view that the information is consistent with the witness account of witnesses who resided in Shakahola before the massacre, is consistent with the videos of the preaching of Mackenzie as part of his recruitment crusades,” Wanjohi said.

He asserted that reading the letter gives the impression that the author and the other co-accused people are still thoroughly brainwashed and ready to carry out their plan to fast till death.

The DCI officer went on to say that they have reason to suspect that Mackenzie is utilising the open court proceedings to disseminate his radicalised ideals to the wider public through his verbal and implicit acts.
