More than 10 people have been confirmed dead, including a child, following a serious road accident in the Othoo area near Awasi along the Kisumu-Nairobi highway.
According to the police commander of Nyando sub-county, Grace Thuo, the accident involved a Super Metro bus and a lorry.
The bus was heading to Nairobi from Kampala. Thuo stated that the accident occurred when the bus driver was attempting to overtake.
“Both vehicles are extensively damaged, and currently, we can confirm that nearly 10 people have died, including a 3 to 4-year-old child,” Thuo said.
She noted that the number could increase because several people rushed to various hospitals had different injuries.
One of the Red Cross officials near the scene, who reported the incident to Radio Jambo, stated that the accident happened around 8 p.m. on Sunday night.
“This accident is severe; I see several bodies here. The bus collided with a lorry carrying rice because we observed it scattered everywhere,” he said.
A journalist who was supposed to be inside the bus but missed it posted in a group, thanking God for saving his life.
“I thank God so much because I had planned to take the bus from Kisumu. I can’t say what happened because other passengers we had planned with boarded while I missed it,” he said.
