According to Samuel Mwangi who lives in the United Kingdom an unfortunate incident happened at JKIA whereby a passenger who had a personal phone valued at Ksh 195,000 had to pay Ksh 124,00 as custom duty. He expressed that many people outside Kenya are even worried to travel back home.

“We are afraid to come back home especially students who will be forced to leave most of their personal items at the airport at least people working abroad have the flexibility to pay this monies, we don’t. Probably the best thing is to sell all personal items especially electronics and buy new ones after arriving. Kenya is under totalitarian rule and the world is doing nothing about it.”

According to to Samuel Mwangi, he also posted a confession from one the man who was ordered to pay the huge amount of money and the KRA receipt.

“Today, following a search through my luggage that yielded no results, officials, aided by the police, proceeded to search my pockets, discovering a two-month-old used phone. They escorted me to their office, where they determined the phone’s value via Google and compelled me to pay duty fees totaling Sh124,254. Despite my clear explanation that the phone was old and contained my international SIM card, I eventually paid the duty and departed from the location.”

This has sparked mixed reactions from Kenyans. Here are some comments below:
