Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo has commented on former ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo’s announcement that he plans to run for president in the 2027 General Election, dismissing the move as unrealistic and suggesting it is driven by deeper political calculations.

Owalo, who recently resigned from his role as Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Delivery and Government Efficiency, made his presidential declaration during a church service in Siaya County. The announcement immediately stirred debate, especially in the Nyanza region where he comes from and where political loyalties are traditionally strong.

Reacting to the news, Odhiambo described Owalo’s presidential ambition as a “wild goose chase” and a “fool’s errand,” arguing that it is unlikely to develop into a serious national campaign. She said the move should not be taken at face value but rather viewed as part of a broader strategy.

According to Odhiambo, if Owalo does not seek the presidency through the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), he could attempt to build himself into a regional power broker. She suggested he might align with or create a smaller political party to challenge the dominance of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Nyanza.

She further claimed that the presidential declaration could simply be a stepping stone toward other political ambitions. In her view, Owalo may ultimately target the Siaya governorship or the Rarieda parliamentary seat in 2027, using the high-profile presidential bid to raise his visibility and influence.

“The idea of a presidential bid outside these options is, in my view, hot air,” Odhiambo said, insisting that his move should be understood through the lens of party rivalry and regional politics rather than a genuine attempt to win the presidency.

Owalo has not directly responded to Odhiambo’s remarks. However, he has previously said his decision to run was guided by consultations, experience in public service and a desire to serve Kenyans directly.

The exchange reflects growing political shifts in Nyanza as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
