Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko recently shared his thoughts on President William Ruto’s tour to the United States, where he was accompanied by a delegation that included several female governors. Sonko praised President Ruto for always traveling with his wife, Mama Rachel Ruto, highlighting the importance of couples supporting each other. He suggested that this practice should be adopted by all couples, emphasizing the value of companionship.

Sonko has however criticized the female governors who accompanied the President without their spouses. He pointed out that having their spouses present would be beneficial, especially in coping with different weather conditions, such as winter. Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, and Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Mumbi Waiguru, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Council of Governors were the female governors who accompanied president Ruto and his wife Rachel to the US.

Sonko’s remarks have sparked a conversation about the role of spouses in political and official trips, with some agreeing with his traditional view on marital support, while others argue that professional obligations and personal choices should take precedence over such expectations. This debate reflects broader societal views on gender roles and the responsibilities of public officials in balancing personal and professional lives.
