A case against a priest for allegedly defiling a thirteen year-old girl was never brought to trial because the case file that had been brought before the judge disappeared mysteriously. Chief Magistrate Stella Atambo reprimanded the DPP after the DCI brought the priest before the court to enter a plea; she was perplexed as to how an accused person could be brought before the court without a charge sheet.

Since there was no crime against him, the priest asked the court to release him through the representation of his attorney. “The prosecutor has been taking my client in circles. He is out on police bond which expires today. If they can’t produce the file, then he should be released unconditionally,” the lawyer said.

However, Toros Jebet, the court prosecutor, refuted any wrongdoing, stating that the file was called back because the DCI needed to provide some recommendations prior to the file being processed. Later, the police bond for the priest was increased and he us expected to appear in court in a later date.
