Kithure Kindiki, born and raised in Tharaka-Nithi County, has made an impressive journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of Kenya’s most influential leaders.

He started his education at Lenana School, where he achieved a Grade C in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). Unhappy with this result, which didn’t meet university entry requirements, he retook the exam at Tharaka Boys High School.

In 1998, Kindiki earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Moi University. He then pursued a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Human Rights Law and Democracy at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, graduating in 2000.

To become an advocate, Kindiki completed his Advocates’ Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies at the Kenya School of Law in 2001. His academic journey culminated in 2002 when he received a PhD in International Law from the University of Pretoria.

Kindiki currently serves as the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration in Kenya, a position he has held since being appointed by President William Ruto on September 27, 2022. He succeeded Fred Matiang’i in this powerful role.

Before his political career, Kindiki began his academic career as a law lecturer at Moi University (1999-2003) and later at the University of Nairobi (2004-2005). A seasoned advocate, he has been practicing at the High Court of Kenya since 2001 and is also a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC) counsel.

In 2013, Kindiki made his political debut when he was elected as Tharaka Nithi’s first senator. During his first term, he served as the Senate’s Majority Leader (2013-2017). He was re-elected in 2017 and became the Deputy Speaker until his removal from the position by the Jubilee Party in 2020. Despite his high political profile, Kindiki has managed to keep his personal life largely private.

Kindiki’s wife, Dr. Joyce Njagi, is a senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi in the Department of Chemistry. She holds a Bachelor of Science, a Master’s in Science, and a PhD in Environmental Chemistry. The couple married in 2001 and has two children, whose lives they have kept away from the public spotlight. Despite her husband’s prominent political career, Dr. Joyce remains low-key and stays away from his political life.
