Winfred Wangui, daughter of former Othaya MP and businesswoman Mary Wambui, was an official in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during President Mwai Kibaki’s administration. This article explores Wangui’s relationship with Armenian Artur Margaryan, one of the Artur brothers deported from Kenya in 2007.
Wangui is Mary Wambui’s daughter. Speculation has long existed about Wambui’s romantic involvement with President Kibaki, leading to rumors that Wangui might be Kibaki’s daughter. In a 2007 interview with Easy FM, Wangui revealed her full name as Winfred Wangui Mwai but chose not to elaborate on her relationship with the First Family, stating that “those who know the truth will stay with the truth.”
Though much of her career remains undocumented, Wangui was known to be an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during Kibaki’s presidency. It was through her work there that she met Artur Margaryan.
In the 2007 Easy FM interview, Wangui recounted meeting the Artur brothers in 2005 during a holiday in Dubai through a mutual friend. They started a business relationship involving “general trading,” which eventually developed into a romantic relationship with Margaryan. Wangui expressed her love for Margaryan, referring to him as her boyfriend and expressing hopes for a future together, including marriage and children.
The Artur brothers gained notoriety in 2006 after a major security breach at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where they allegedly assaulted security officers and brandished guns at customs officials to avoid luggage inspection. Following the incident, Wangui was among the civil servants suspended for allegedly using her position to secure VIP treatment for the Artur brothers at the airport. ODM leader Raila Odinga later accused the brothers of being mercenaries hired to eliminate opposition leaders. Then-Immigration Minister Gideon Konchellah reported to President Kibaki that the Artur brothers were international criminals.
