As the world gears up for the 2024 Paris Olympics, anticipation is mounting not only for the thrilling athletic competitions but also for the mesmerising cultural performances.Among the artists set to grace the global stage is Kenya’s very own Shiphton Onyango, famously known as Winyo, a maestro whose music carries the soulful essence of the Luo tribe from the Lake Victoria region of Western Kenya.

Derived from the Luo word for “a bird,” Winyo’s moniker aptly captures the ethereal quality of his voice, often likened to the melodious chirping of birds.

“I am incredibly grateful to be representing my country, Kenya, at the Olympics,” Winyo wrote on Instagram after confirming his participation in the games. “There is so much to share with you this year,” he wrote.

The foundation of Winyo’s musical career is the traditional benga style, which he has revived with a modern touch while keeping the unique guitar playing of guitar greats like George Ramogi and Ochieng’ Nelly.Winyo explores a wide range of socioeconomic topics in her repertoire, which includes the difficulties faced by homeless children and the complexities of dating and marriage.

She sings mainly in Dholuo, Swahili, and English. The renowned musician first gained recognition as a member of the well-known trio “Rateng,” where he developed his guitar, vocal, and compositional abilities.

His contributions to the group’s 2009 album “Thumology” demonstrated his versatility as an artist. On the global scene, Winyo’s skill has not gone unnoticed.

He was recognised for his extraordinary talent in important contests as the Radio France International (RFI) Discoveries, where he placed as a finalist in 2010 and 2011.
