On July 24, 2024, President William Ruto nominated John Mbadi as the new Cabinet Secretary for Treasury and National Planning.

This appointment marks a significant step in Mbadi’s long and distinguished career in public service and finance.

John Mbadi’s educational journey began at Ligongo Primary School, where he earned his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) from 1979 to 1986.

He then attended Kokuro Boys Secondary School and obtained his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) between 1987 and 1990.

Mbadi pursued higher education at the University of Nairobi, where he completed a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree from 1992 to 1996. His quest for knowledge didn’t stop there.

He also took on the challenge of self-studying to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) from 1998 to 1999.

To further enhance his qualifications, Mbadi earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Nairobi between 2004 and 2007.

Mbadi’s career in public service and finance spans over two decades. His professional journey began as an Assistant Accountant at the Student Welfare Authority from 1996 to 1999.

He then joined the University of Nairobi, serving as an Accountant from 1999 to 2003 and later as a Senior Accountant from 2003 to 2005.

From 2004 to 2008, Mbadi held the position of Finance Director for Medair East Africa’s South Sudan Programme. This role gave him invaluable experience in managing finances in a challenging environment.

Mbadi’s political career started in 2008 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Gwassi Constituency, a position he held until 2013. During his tenure, he also served as an Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister from October 2012 to 2013.

He was then elected as the Member of Parliament for Suba Constituency from March 2013 to 2017. Since 2017, he has served as a Nominated Member of Parliament, continuing his commitment to public service.
