As the adage goes, disability is not inability. John Njenga is a testament to that reality as he continues to thrive in his metalwork business despite his disability.

John is a husband and a father who resides and works in Ruiru. He was born and raised healthy until 2014 when the unexpected happened. On that particular day, he was headed to his sister’s funeral and on his way, he was swapped off the road by a track. The driver eloped, leaving him lifeless in the middle of the road.

Well-wishers rushed him to hospital where he was referred to Kenyatta National Hospital. One of his legs had broken 5 times. It couldn’t resume functioning, and he was in a lot of pain. He stayed in Kenyatta for 1.5 years before he was discharged. It was a hard time for him but with his family’s support, he was hopeful for a better tomorrow.

Medics explained that the leg had to be cut off to relieve the pain and enable him to start life afresh. At first, he didn’t agree with the doctor’s suggestion, but with time, he understood that it was for his own good. The surgery was done, and with time, he recovered and returned home, though with a disability. However, he accepted his fate and decided to give himself a chance.

One of his friends, who had been working in the metal industry for a long time, instilled the skill into him. Being sharp-minded helped him learn so quick and he began to put the skill into action. His family opened up a small business for him, where he started doing metal work. Over the years, he has expanded his business, employing several people into the business.

He believes that as long as God is on his side, not even his disability can limit him. His advice is for people to man up and learn skilful work to avoid the unemployment issues that are affecting many. In conclusion, he encourages those with disabilities, stating that they should accept that reality and give themselves a chance, for they are worth it.
